EP 2-11 The Beginning of the End

Play

It’s getting to be that time of year again – the end of summer thru-hiking season. Our first hikers are completing their journeys – today we get to hear from two of them, Homework and Juan Durer. Lessons learned, summits summitted, and the feeling of the end. There’s a lot of heart in this episode – take a quiet half hour and make sure you listen through to the end of the podcast, I think you’ll be glad you did.

  1. Gizmo what a truly awesome podcast. I am not a hiker, but what a great listen to experience these trails through someone else’s hike. Definitely on my list to start some local trails. Thank you!

  2. Hey Gizmo,

I just started listening to Sound of the Trail so I’m still on Season 1 but my best friend and I want to hike the PCT in April. It’s something we both want to do and we are kind of nervous. The longest I’ve ever hiked is 7 days! I was curious as to how much money we should start saving up to buy things will need and if there are are any pointers on gear you can give us.

    Thanks

  3. Hi, Gizmo,

What a great podcast! I love everything that you and others do to make “Sounds of the Trail” such a wonderful show.

Just wondering: what ever happened to all of your correspondents? In particular, I’m thinking about “Hollywood,” who was reporting from the PCT. She was an interesting character. What was the result of her hike and where did her hike end?

    • I was wondering the same thing. It felt like several of the correspondents were only on one or two episodes this season.

  4. I don’t know how else to communicate with you, Gizmo, but … what happened? Sept. 6 we heard Wanderer’s moving final podcast from the AT, then … crickets.

Believe me, I know how much work it is to put out a podcast. But SotT has been so interesting; I’d hate to see it go away.

Have you given up? Can you possibly post something on this site to let your fans know what’s happening?

    Thanks.

“Pony” (Colorado Trail ’15, AT ’16)

  5. Hi Gizmo,

I love your podcast. I’ve just finished the first season and am excited to get started on the second. My friend and I are planning on hiking 4000km across Southeast Asia for the next year. Along the way we are going to be speaking with and filming the stories of people in the region making clothing in positive and sustainable ways.

When we first started planning (I am a complete hiking novice) I was so nervous and had absolutely no idea about if and how this trip would happen. But listening to Sounds of the Trail has inspired me and I’m starting to believe that this crazy idea just might be possible. The stories you share are so wonderful and I just wanted to thank you so very much for all that you do.

    Megan

    • Hi Megan, this is Juan Durer. Your upcoming trip and project sounds great. I’m writing you because I’ll be traveling through SE Asia as well. I’ll be in the Philippines on December and then Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam in January-March. It would be cool if our paths crossed at some point. Would love to see how your film turns out, so keep me posted. Cheers!

  6. Hi Gizmo,
Your podcast has inspired me to hike the AZT and the Colorado trail in 2017! If you are looking for other trail correspondents, I would like to apply?
    Jim

  7. Loved this episode so much, Gizmo! Thanks for all you do. I have been binge listening while my son (Tarzan) is back on the AT. (He thru hiked it in 2016 and is out there now for a 40 day “vacation” before a job commitment begins in May. I looked forward to the episodes to see how the correspondents were doing. I especially was pulling for Homework, especially after his partner left him to continue on his own. I look forward to hearing more from him in whatever capacity he can contribute in the future. Wanderer’s summit had me in tears…. “Here’s to you, dad” Here’s to YOU, Wanderer!
